Frequently Asked Questions
“Red is the color of emergency. (RED) uses the force of consumerism to defend the world’s most vulnerable. That’s it. It’s that simple.” – Bono
(RED) was designed to kick-start a sustainable flow of private sector money into the Global Fund, one of the world’s largest funders of global health. During the first four years of the Global Fund, and prior to (RED), businesses had contributed just $5 million to the Global Fund, meaning its public-private charter was in jeopardy. Since (RED)’s launch in 2006, it has generated over $760 million for the Global Fund–more than any other private sector contributor.
The money generated by (RED) goes towards funding HIV/AIDS grants in countries with a high prevalence of HIV and/or mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The majority of (RED)-supported grants operate in sub-Saharan Africa, which is home to more than two-thirds of the global HIV population. (RED) and the Global Fund work closely together to ensure the money is distributed effectively and transparently across (RED)’s portfolio of grants. (RED) currently funds programs run by local experts in 8 Sub-Saharan Africa, and 2 Latin America.
(RED) partners supporting the Global Fund make either a set monetary donation each year, or, allocate a percentage of the profit from each (RED) product sold. That money goes directly to the Global Fund, with no overhead taken by (RED).
